Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to President Obama's nomination of Michele Leonhart to be Administrator of Drug Enforcement in the Department of Justice. Your opinion is very important to me, and I acknowledge your concerns about this critical issue.
As you may know, Ms. Leonhart is the Deputy Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). However, she has served as the Acting Administrator of the DEA since the resignation of Administrator Karen Tandy in 2007. Ms. Leonhart was nominated to succeed Tandy under the previous Administration on April 15, 2008.
A police officer with the Baltimore Police Department, Ms. Leonhart has been with the DEA since 1980. She has served in several capacities within the DEA, including senior management roles in DEA headquarters as well as Field Divisions across the United States.
I am currently reviewing Ms. Leonhart's qualifications for this position, so please be assured that I will keep your views in mind. As your United States Senator, I rely on the important communications I receive from my constituents to guide my work in Washington. I am working diligently everyday to respond to the many valuable insights I receive from New Jerseyans just like you.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I invite you to visit my website (http://menendez.senate.gov) to learn more about how I am standing up for New Jersey families in the United States Senate.
